All dressed up and nowhere to go: E-learning in 2012

Consider this scenario…

As product manager of one of the company's key brands, you are developing a global training programme for pharmaceutical sales representatives to train them about a new indication. Externally, your agency is prepared with instructional designers, medical writers and developers to rapidly develop a slide set of materials into an engaging e-learning module. Internally, you've lined up medical affairs and marketing to review the content and IT support to help with any technical requirements.

Delivery date comes…

The agency has done a great job on the module, creating an engaging instructionally-sound learning experience with a thorough overview of the therapeutic area.

But then the question arises…

Where will the e-learning reside? You consider sending out CDs to the various markets; IT suggests setting up a temporary FTP site which the users can use to access the content. However, neither of these approaches seem completely appropriate.

What about using a learning management system (LMS)?

One of your colleagues suggests you consider LMS options, but following a brief search you come to the conclusion that finding a suitable LMS is far too daunting a task and would also be too much of an investment for a single learning module, so you continue with the CD and FTP options. The modules are sent out and downloaded and never heard from again…
